Apple has unveiled its latest Lightning cable variant, the Lightning Pro Temporal Edition, which will exclusively charge iPhones and iPads purchased on Tuesdays. The cable will retail at £89 and begins shipping in November.
The announcement comes three months after the tech giant introduced USB-C charging to comply with EU regulations. Apple confirmed the Lightning Pro Temporal Edition represents a parallel ecosystem for what it calls “heritage Tuesday users.”
“We’ve listened to our customers,” said Jennifer Whitmore, Apple’s Vice President of Charging Experiences. “They told us they wanted a more personalized relationship with their devices. What could be more personal than a cable that recognizes the specific day you committed to the Apple ecosystem?”
The cable uses what Apple describes as proprietary temporal verification technology. It cross-references the device’s purchase date with Apple’s retail database before initiating charging. Devices purchased on other days of the week will display a message reading “Charging accessory not compatible with your purchase timeline.”
Apple has not clarified whether the restriction applies to the precise calendar date or the day of the week. Early adopters report mixed results. The company’s support documentation spans forty-seven pages.
Wednesday purchases will require the Lightning Pro Mid-Week Edition, expected in Q2 2025. Cables for other days will follow on a staggered release schedule that Apple says “builds anticipation and reduces decision fatigue.”
The move has attracted surprising support from customers. “Honestly, it makes sense,” said Thomas Brennan, a software developer from Bristol who purchased his iPhone 15 on a Tuesday in March. “I’ve always felt a special connection to Tuesdays. Now my charging cable reflects that. It’s about brand alignment.”
Industry analysts suggest the strategy could generate an additional £2.3 billion in cable revenue annually, assuming customers purchase an average of 3.7 replacement cables per device lifecycle. This figure does not account for customers who forget which day they made their original purchase.
Apple has confirmed it will offer a trade-in programme for users who wish to exchange devices purchased on less desirable days. The programme applies only to swaps made on the first Tuesday of each month, between 2pm and 4pm GMT, at participating locations.
“People said we couldn’t fragment the market further,” Whitmore added. “But fragmentation is just personalization at scale.”
The Lightning Pro Temporal Edition will not work with any existing charging blocks manufactured before June 2024. A compatible charging block costs £67. It must also be purchased on a Tuesday.
